Why Quit and Travel?

There are many many reasons to quit and travel and for nearly everyone it will be something different. As such everyone’s trip will also be different. Quitting your job to travel is certainly something that should not be taken lightly and should take quit a bit of analytical thinking before you pull the trigger.

After reading ‘The 4-hour Work Week’ by Tim Ferriss I quickly realized that one part of life I was not thinking about correctly was how I was going to fulfill my dreams.  In this case, Tim Ferriss’ book really helps with the overall process for determining your dreams and making them come true. Although his book is much more about the concept of making money in only a few hours a week Use the following steps and ensure that the answer to each question in the parenthesis is ‘yes’:

  1. Write down on a piece of paper your exact dream (is this exactly what you want?)
  2. Write down each step or piece of your dream with an estimated cost (can you afford your estimate?)
  3. Optimize your dream and research all costs associated with your dream (can you afford your dream?)
  4. Execute on your plan including saving money and fulfilling your dream!

This all might sounds a bit cliche, but I think you’ll be surprised how cheap it is to travel the world for 1-year or whatever your dream might be.  For more information on budgeting, check-out the main ‘Budget’ page.

I’m in what I would term the “in between” stage of taking the plunge, leaving my job, and traveling for a decent amount of time (6-12 months). At the moment, I’m grappling with my inner fear that I’ll regret leaving my job because the job market is still pretty much in the crapper and could still be when I return. As much as I understand and actually agree with the arguments that 1) the market will likely be different in a year, 2) there are ways to market the skills you learn while traveling, and so on – I’m not at the point yet where I’m emotionally buying it. Did you guys struggle with this? How did you get past it?

    Thanks!!

    Liz,
Its cheaper to travel with two people than just one person, and its also more enjoyable. I’ve been saving for years and have had this dream my entire life! You only live once! If you really are game for going… we could possibly team up. :) Rachel
